Signature Extractor

Already have your handwritten signature inside a scanned form, application or document image? Use the Signature Extractor to isolate the ink, review the selected area and create a separate signature image without recreating the signature from scratch.

If you need to create a new signature instead, use the Online Signature Generator.

Extract an existing signature

Find a handwritten signature inside a document

Upload a photo or scan of the document. The tool suggests likely handwritten regions, then you choose the correct one or draw the exact area yourself before creating a separate signature PNG.

This extractor currently works with document images. If the signature is inside a PDF, export the relevant page as an image before extracting the ink. If you already have a separate signature and only want to place it on a PDF, use Apply Signature to PDF instead.
Quick answer

Upload a clear document image, choose an automatic signature suggestion or select the exact region yourself, then download the transparent PNG or continue to Signature Resizer.

REAL EXTRACTION PREVIEW

See What Gets Extracted

The extractor starts with the full scanned form, suggests likely handwritten regions and then builds the separate PNG from the area you confirm. The final selection remains yours because text, dates and stamps can sit close to the signature.

GUIDANCE

Extract a signature from a scanned document image

On a scanned form, a signature can sit beside typed names, dates, stamps or lines. The extractor looks for larger regions that resemble handwriting and shows a small set of possible matches, but you decide which area actually contains your signature before continuing.

If none of the suggestions is clean enough, draw the selection around the ink manually.

GUIDANCE

Keep the Extracted Signature Clean for Upload

The extracted PNG keeps the signature ink while the surrounding paper can be made transparent. Before you download it, check that the selection does not include nearby text, a date or part of a ruled line because those details will become part of the signature image too.

If the application also specifies pixel dimensions or a KB limit, send the extracted image to Signature Resizer after the extraction is finished.

  • Review automatic suggestions for likely handwritten regions.
  • Draw the selection yourself when the document is crowded or the suggestion is wrong.
  • Create a transparent PNG while keeping the original signature ink visible.
  • Continue to Signature Resizer when the portal asks for specific dimensions or file size.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Before You Upload the Document Image

Use the clearest scan or document photo available because the extractor needs enough contrast to separate the signature ink from printed text, stamps and background noise. A heavily compressed screenshot can merge thin handwriting strokes with nearby lines and make the automatic suggestions less useful.

Keep the full signature visible inside the image. If part of the ink is cut off at the edge of the scan, extracting the remaining section will not recreate the missing strokes.

GUIDANCE

What Makes a Signature Easier to Extract?

A clean source gives the selection tools enough information to separate handwriting from the rest of the page.

  • The whole signature is visible and not cut off by the image edge.
  • The signature is darker than the surrounding paper.
  • Nearby typed text or stamps do not overlap the ink heavily.
  • The scan is clear enough to preserve thin pen strokes.
WORKFLOW

How to Select the Signature Area Cleanly

Start with the smallest rectangle that contains the full signature. Leaving a large amount of paper around the ink makes the extracted image harder to resize later and can also pull nearby text into the transparent output.

Zoom in before confirming the selection and look at the first and last pen strokes. If either side has been clipped, expand the box slightly rather than trying to redraw the missing section afterwards.

CHECKLIST

Common Signature Extraction Problems

If the automatic suggestion contains the wrong region, choose another suggestion or draw the selection yourself. The extractor should help isolate existing ink, not guess or recreate missing handwriting.

  • Printed text or a date gets included inside the selection.
  • Part of the signature is cut off because the selection box is too tight.
  • Thin pen strokes disappear when the source scan is blurry or compressed too heavily.
  • A stamp, line or another handwritten note is mistaken for the signature.
GUIDANCE

Extracting a Signature Is Different From Creating One

Signature Extractor works only when your handwritten signature already exists inside the uploaded image. It does not invent a missing signature or turn a typed name into new handwriting.

If you need to make a new visual signature from your name or draw one from scratch, use the Online Signature Generator instead.

OUTPUT & SIZING

Extract First, Resize Afterwards

Extraction and resizing solve two different problems. The extractor separates the ink from the document, while Signature Resizer changes the finished signature image to the dimensions or file size limit required by a form or portal.

How to Extract a Signature From a Document Online

Upload a clear image of the document, review the suggested handwriting regions and choose the one containing your signature. Tighten the selection if needed, check the extracted PNG and then download it or continue to Signature Resizer.

  • Upload the document image: start with the clearest scan or photo available.
  • Choose the signature region: use a suggestion or select it manually.
  • Review the extracted ink: check that nearby text and lines are not included.
  • Download or resize: save the transparent PNG or continue to the resizer.
FINAL OUTPUT

Download the Signature PNG or Continue to the Next Step

Once the selected region contains only the signature you want, download the transparent PNG and keep the original scan separately. The transparent image can then be resized for a portal or placed on a PDF where that use is permitted.

Avoid repeatedly editing or recompressing the extracted image because very thin pen strokes can become softer after several exports. If you need a specific dimension or KB limit, make that change once in Signature Resizer.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Signature Extractor FAQs

How do I extract a signature from a scanned document?

Upload a clear image of the document and review the suggested handwritten regions. Select the correct signature, tighten the area if needed and download the extracted image once the surrounding text and lines are removed.

Can I extract a signature from an image online?

Yes, when the signature is already visible in a supported JPG, PNG or WebP document image. The tool isolates the selected handwritten region rather than creating a new signature.

Can I download the extracted signature with a transparent background?

The extractor can create a transparent PNG when that output is supported. Review the edges first because nearby printed text, ruled lines or stamps inside the selected area can also appear in the extracted image.

What is the difference between Signature Extractor and Signature Resizer?

Signature Extractor separates handwritten ink from a larger document image. Signature Resizer works on a signature image you already have and changes its dimensions, format or file size target for the next workflow.

Can the tool create a signature that is missing from the document?

No. The extractor is intended to isolate handwriting that already exists in the uploaded image. If you need to create your own new signature, use the Online Signature Generator instead.

Can I place the extracted signature on a PDF?

After extracting and preparing your own signature image, you can continue to Apply Signature to PDF where signature image placement is accepted. The receiving organisation can still require another form of electronic or verified signing.

Responsible use of extracted signatures

PassportPhotoBox provides tools for preparing your own signature images and supporting documents. The extracted image does not prove identity, authorship or approval, and you should only use it where you are authorised to use that signature. If an organisation requires a specific signing method, follow its current instructions instead of assuming that an uploaded signature image is sufficient. Review the acceptable use and privacy information when it applies.
